Sometimes federal employees hoping to receive Disability Retirement (DR) benefits unfortunately make an employment decision that can render them disqualified for DR benefits according to OPM’s criteria. Here are a few “Do’s” and “Don’ts” that can make or break your DR application:

DO:

Engage in the official Reasonable Accommodation process if your medical condition is preventing you from performing your duties or attending work.

DON’T:

Decline an offer of Reasonable Accommodation. Instead, you should respond to your agency that their offer is insufficient based on medical reasons and propose new parameters that would work better for you.
