The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) secured over $482.1 million for workers who have experienced discrimination in the private, state and local government, and federal workplaces during the fiscal year 2016, which ended on September 30.

The following is a breakdown of the total awards:

  1. $347.9 million for employment discrimination plaintiffs in private sector, as well as state and local government workplaces, through mediation, conciliation, and settlements
  2. $52.2 million for victims of discriminatory practices through agency litigation
  3. $82 million for federal employees and applicants

In each of the categories above, the EEOC secured significant changes to discriminatory practices to correct violations of equal employment opportunity laws and prevent future discriminatory conduct. EEOC Chair Jenny Yang expressed that the agency was proud of the solutions which promoted prosperity for workers, employers, and communities.

The following are the agency’s accomplishments in the fiscal year 2016:

  1. Increased the number of charges staff remedied to 97,443 charges, which is 6.5% more compared to the fiscal year 2015. This increase led to a reduction of charge workload by 3.8% to 73,508, which is a 3,100 charge reduction compared to last year.
  2. Handled over 585,000 calls to its toll-free number and over 160,000 pre-charge inquiries in field offices that reflect the substantial demand for the agency’s services.
  3. Helped workers recover relief by resolving more than 15,800 charges of discrimination through settlements, mediations, and conciliations.
  4. Resolved 273 systemic investigations before filing litigation, recovering more than $20.3 million in remedies. In litigation, the agency resolved 21 systemic cases – six of which involved at least 50 victims of discrimination and two of which involved more than 1,000 victims of discrimination.
  5. EEOC’s outreach programs reached 315,000 people during the year.
  6. EEOC’s legal staff resolved 139 merits lawsuits in federal district courts, resulting in the monetary recovery of $52.2 million. 86 lawsuits were filed alleging discrimination and achieve an approximately 90.6% of favorable resolutions in district court.
