What Is Social Security Disability Insurance?

Social Security Disability Insurance is a federal program that provides monthly financial assistance to those who become disabled. If you are disabled and unable to continue working before you reach retirement age, you may qualify.

Who Is Eligible?

Eligibility for Social Security Disability Insurance is determined by your work credits and medical eligibility. These requirements differ per individual case, but the method the Social Security Administration follows is more or less based on age, work history, and medical condition.

Work Requirements:
How many work credits you have depends on the number of years you have worked while paying Social Security taxes, or FICA taxes. Most people earn about 4 work credits each year. The number of work credits you need to be eligible depends on your age when you became disabled. For instance, a 30-year old person applying for SSDI would require fewer work credits than a 50-year old.

Medical Requirements:
To meet SSDI medical eligibility, you must have a severe, long-term, total disability. By the Social Security Administration’s definition, this means you are unable to do the work you did before and you cannot adjust to other types of work. Your disability must also have lasted, or be expected to last, one year, or to result in death.
