COVID-19 Vaccines & Religious Exemptions

The recent pandemic has shaken the workplace – especially for federal workers across the country. Federal workers are required to take the COVID-19 vaccination in an attempt to stop the spread of the Coronavirus. However, exemptions are available for workers who have a physical disability or a religion that prevents them from receiving a vaccine.

The regulations surrounding religious exemptions have not been made clear for employees. If the COVID-19 vaccine goes against your religious beliefs, our team at Pines Federal explains what you need to prove your case to federal employers.

How to Prove that I Have a Religious Exemption

Religious beliefs are one of two different exemptions to the COVID-19 vaccine for employees who are required to take the vaccination. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “some people may decline vaccination because of a sincerely held religious belief. This is referred to as a religious exemption.” Although the CDC nor the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) provide specific requirements needed to qualify for a religious exemption, both mention that the employee must have a sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance that prevents them from taking the vaccine.

To request a religious exemption, you must fill out a religious exemption application form. The form will ask you for a personal statement and a report of your immunization history. You will also need to provide documentation about your beliefs and explain why you have received vaccinations in the past (if applicable). In some cases, employers may ask your religious leader to testify on your behalf.

Protect Your Rights

Upholding religious beliefs can be difficult at a time like this. However, there are laws that protect federal employees to allow them to protect their beliefs in and out of the workplace. If you want to request a religious exemption as a federal employee but you’re unsure where to start, our team at Pines Federal is here to guide you through the process.
