Who Is Eligible for OPM Disability Retirement Benefits?
Under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) or the Civil Service Retirement Service (CSRS), all federal employees become eligible for disability benefits once they have served for a specified time.
The duration of service required to qualify for FERS is 18 months while five years is service is required to qualify for CSRS. Disability actions, however, are not automatic – they must be approved by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which has the authority to grant or deny retirement disability benefits.
Total disability is not required to receive benefits. As long as a doctor determines that you can’t perform at least one of your essential work duties, you are likely to qualify. You also do not need to be disabled because of a job-related injury or illness.

Can I Receive Benefits & Continue to Work?
Yes. Among the various differences between OPM Disability Retirement and other disability benefits programs is that the former permits federal employees to continue working while receiving benefits or applying for them – even if they are placed on light duty.
