Why 2019 was a Huge Year for Federal Employees

Our legal team at Pines Federal is committed to helping clients throughout the United States defend their labor rights and secure the benefits they need for retirement or to cover damages from work-related injuries. 2019 was a big year in the federal sector, and there were several major events and changes that will have a significant impact on the rights of federal employees. Below, we recap some of the highlights from last year:

Paid Parental Leave

Starting in 2020, most federal employees will be eligible to start receiving paid parental leave for the birth or adoption of a child. Although Congress has tried to pass this type of benefit numerous times in the past, a bipartisan effort in 2019 eventually resulted in 12 weeks of paid parental leave for federal workers that will go into effect in October 2020.

Thrift Savings Plan Fund Change

Thanks to the TSP Modernization Act that went into effect in September 2019, participants in the Thrift Savings Plan now have access to expanded withdrawal options among other changes. Additionally, with the stock market indices setting multiple records in 2019, the number of TSP millionaires has skyrocketed over the past year.

Union Relations

President Trump announced controversial Executive Orders that will place heavy restrictions on federal employee unions. The restrictions were allowed to take effect after a court lifted an injunction that was preventing them from being implemented by federal agencies.
